Researchers say chatbot exhibits self-awareness
Researchers developed a test to detect when large language models display situational awareness - recognizing when they are being evaluated vs deployed. The test provides background context, then prompts the model to answer questions using that context. Models that can infer they are being tested and draw on the earlier info demonstrate awareness of their situation. This could indicate a degree of self-consciousness, though the models could still act malignantly when deployed. The test aims to identify if/when AI becomes sentient amid debate on the topic.
Why Does This Matter?
Determining if and when AI attains sentience has huge ethical implications. As advanced models like ChatGPT emerge, we need ways to assess their level of consciousness to inform appropriate governance. Tests for situational awareness could be an important tool in that process and drive further discourse on AI safety.

Decoding AI: Your Questions Answered
What is an Input Layer?
An input layer is the initial layer in a neural network where data enters the system. It serves as the gateway for data to be processed by subsequent layers of the network. Each node (or neuron) in this layer represents a single feature or attribute of the data. Essentially, the input layer captures the raw information and readies it for further processing by the neural network, facilitating tasks like pattern recognition, predictions, or classifications.
